Welcome to HugoFamily

One calm place for shopping, tasks, the canteen, journaling, the freezer, pocket money, and the whole family. This guide walks you through what matters — no tech jargon, just simple steps.

📱 Mobile-first 🔑 No passwords 👨‍👩‍👧 For the family 🏠 Home Assistant

Signing in with a magic link

The app uses no passwords. Instead it emails you a secure link — you tap it and you're in.

  1. Open the sign-in page and type your email.
  2. Tap Send link.
  3. Open the email on the same device and tap the link.
  4. Done — you're signed in. The link is short-lived and works only once.
A brand-new account must first be approved by a parent. If you see "waiting for approval", ask a parent to let you in (see Inviting a member).

Passkey

Besides the magic link you can use a passkey — Face ID, a fingerprint, or a security key. Setup happens inside the app.

  1. Open Me → Add a passkey.
  2. Read the short explanation and tap Add passkey.
  3. Confirm in the system dialog (Face ID / fingerprint / PIN).
  4. After saving you return to your profile. You can remove the key anytime in the same section.
On first sign-in the app may offer passkey setup — the step is optional.

Adding the app to your phone

You can save the app to your home screen as an icon — it then opens full-screen, just like a normal app.

Easiest way: in the app open Me and tap Add to Home Screen. On Android the install prompt appears right away; on iPhone a short guide walks you through adding it via Safari.

🍎 iPhone / iPad (Safari)

  1. Open the app in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share icon (square with an arrow).
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Confirm with Add.

🤖 Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the app in Chrome.
  2. Tap ⋮ (menu, top-right).
  3. Choose Add to Home screen or Install app.
  4. Confirm.

Notifications

Get alerts for new tasks, shopping-list changes, and family events — even when the app is closed. You turn notifications on yourself.

  1. Open Me (your profile).
  2. In the Notifications section tap Enable notifications and confirm in the system dialog.
  3. Choose notification types and optional quiet hours — times use the family timezone (set by a parent under Settings).
On iPhone, push notifications work only after you add HugoFamily to your home screen (iOS 16.4+).

Adding a shopping item

There are two lists: Daily for quick shopping and Weekly for the big shop with a store plan.

  1. At the bottom, pick Daily or Weekly.
  2. Tap the big + button at the bottom-right.
  3. Type what you need. You can add a quantity, price, and store.
  4. Save with Add. After buying, check it off by swiping or tapping Bought.
A new family starts with no stores — add them under Settings → Manage stores. On the Free plan you can have at most two stores.

Adding a new task

Family and above Tasks help the family remember what needs doing — with a due date, priority, and the person in charge.

  1. Tap Tasks at the bottom.
  2. Tap + at the bottom-right.
  3. Type the task title. Optionally add a description, due date, priority, category, and who it's for.
  4. Save with Add task. Mark it done later with Done ✓.
Due date and assigning the task to yourself are what the phone calendar uses (Family Plus). See Tasks in your phone calendar.

Task category management

Parents only Parents can manage the category list shown when creating and filtering tasks.

  1. Under Settings, open Manage task categories.
  2. Add a new category with +, or choose Edit on an existing one.
  3. When a category is deleted, tasks stay in the family and simply become uncategorized.

Tasks in your phone calendar

Family Plus On Family Plus, dated tasks you own appear in the calendar you already use. You add and complete tasks in HugoFamily; the phone calendar is a view. Each family member manages their own subscription.

  1. Tap Me in the top right (your avatar). Open Calendar integration.
  2. Tap + and choose Calendar subscription. Create a subscription (for example iPhone) with Create subscription. Tap Add to Apple Calendar, Add to Google Calendar, or Add to Outlook. The link stays hidden — the calendar app on your phone will open it.
  3. You will see all-day events: only your open tasks with a due date. Undated tasks do not appear. Other members’ tasks do not either.
  4. A completed HugoFamily task disappears from the calendar. Apple and Google refresh the subscription on their own — sometimes it takes tens of minutes.

Optionally you can connect Google instead of subscribing — HugoFamily then writes tasks into its own calendar in Google.

  1. Tap + and choose Connect Google Calendar, then allow access. HugoFamily will create a Google calendar named HugoFamily — not your personal primary calendar.
  2. Dated tasks that belong to you appear there. Changing the title or date in HugoFamily updates the same event. Completing or deleting the task removes the event from the visible calendar (usually within moments).
  3. Disconnect Google Calendar stops further updates. The HugoFamily calendar in Google stays — you can delete it in Google yourself if you want.
The subscription (Apple, Google link, Outlook) is read-only. Changes in that subscription do not come back to HugoFamily.
On a connected Google calendar: an event with a time or spanning several days is stored in HugoFamily as the start date. HugoFamily may then overwrite it in Google as all-day.
If you change the same field (title or date) in both HugoFamily and Google, the HugoFamily version wins.
Events that someone other than your Google account creates in the HugoFamily calendar are not imported as tasks.

Or connect a CalDAV account — HugoFamily (tasks) in Reminders and HugoFamily (events) in Calendar on iPhone and Mac. Each device has its own key.

  1. Tap + and choose Add CalDAV account. Enter server calendar.hugofamily.app, the username, and the password that is shown only now.
  2. Name the key after the device (for example iPhone). Later you revoke only that key by name if the phone is lost.
  3. Another device (MacBook) gets a new key — we do not show the password from the first device again. At most 5 keys.
  4. Revoking the last key or Disconnect CalDAV account signs the whole account off. Tasks in HugoFamily stay.

HugoCards — loyalty cards

Family and above A family wallet for loyalty cards — securely stored codes, camera scan, and a large barcode at checkout. Managed by parents.

  1. On the home screen open the HugoCards module or go from the shopping list.
  2. A parent adds a card manually or via Scan card.
  3. At checkout tap the card and show the full-screen barcode.

HugoNotes — family notes

Family Plus Shared colour sticky notes — a short message for the whole family, pin on the home screen, optional expiry.

  1. On the home screen open the HugoNotes module.
  2. Tap +, write a short message, and pick a colour.
  3. You can pin a note to the home screen or set an expiry date.

HugoMeals — meal plan

Family Plus Meal ideas from the whole family, a parent-controlled weekly plan, and ingredients to shopping after you confirm.

  1. Open the HugoMeals module on the home screen.
  2. Add a meal idea; others can vote.
  3. Parents plan the week and, after confirming, send ingredients to shopping.
School lunches from Strava.cz are in Canteen (HugoCanteen) — that is not the HugoMeals weekly plan.

HugoCanteen — canteen

Family Plus Parents only The school lunch menu from Strava.cz. Hugo only shows it — it never changes orders.

  1. In Settings, open Canteen (HugoCanteen).
  2. Add an account: canteen number, username, and password from Strava.cz. Assign it to a child.
  3. Hugo checks the login. It never changes canteen orders — it only reads the menu.
  4. After connecting, open Canteen on the home screen — this week and next week. A parent refreshes with Refresh.
  5. A child with an assigned account sees only their own menu and the home-screen strip.
Hugo does not show allergens, account balance, or write orders.

HugoJournal — journal

Family and above A personal journal for measurements and notes — weight trends, goals, cycle, and calm charts. Not a medical app. Intimate activities have their own HugoIntimate module.

  1. Open the HugoJournal module and add an entry (e.g. weight).
  2. In trends, follow the charts and set a goal.
  3. Find period logging and cycle estimates under Cycle — a strip plus a 30-day window; you can offer a partner read-only access from that page.
  4. You can cancel sharing at any time. The cycle is not offered to children this way.

HugoIntimate — intimate journal

Family Plus A private intimate journal separate from HugoJournal — encrypted activities, a stopwatch, and an overview just for you. Sharing a cycle with one adult already works: you offer it in HugoJournal → Cycle; after they accept, they see it here on the Intimate home screen (read-only).

  1. Open the HugoIntimate module on the home screen (Family Plus plan).
  2. Start a session with the stopwatch or add an entry; children cannot access it.
  3. Entries do not appear in HugoJournal or on journal charts.
  4. You track your cycle in HugoJournal → Cycle. You can offer read-only access to one adult in the family — after they accept, they see it in HugoIntimate (home + expandable calendar).
  5. You can cancel sharing at any time. The cycle is not offered to children this way.

HugoFreezer — freezer

Family Plus Freezer memory — write a number on the bag; Hugo remembers what’s inside, how old it is, and where it is.

  1. Open HugoFreezer and go through the short wizard (freezers, places, categories).
  2. Put a package in: write the large number on the bag and fill in what you know.
  3. Take out by number or browse the inventory — older items show on the home card.

HugoPocket — pocket money

Family Plus Weekly pocket-money ritual: kids check off help, parents close and review the week — then assign a free-form amount.

  1. A parent opens HugoPocket and sets core tasks (or follows the guide).
  2. During the week, kids mark completed help and can add one-off extras.
  3. A parent closes the week. When more than one week is waiting to be evaluated, Hugo opens the oldest.
  4. They evaluate and assign pocket money — the week locks. They mark handover with Hand over reward (status Handed over).

Plans and upgrade

HugoFamily has three plans. A parent manages them in Settings.

  • Free — daily and weekly shopping lists, up to two stores, two members.
  • Family — tasks, loyalty cards, HugoJournal, offline reading, and more members.
  • Family Plus — HugoNotes, HugoMeals, Canteen (HugoCanteen), HugoIntimate, HugoFreezer, HugoPocket, phone calendar, offline write, AI plugin, Home Assistant, and more.

Upgrade or manage your subscription under Settings → Subscription and plan. Locked modules on the home screen lead to the plans overview.

Offline PWA mode

After installing to your home screen, HugoFamily can work without a network — depending on your plan.

  • Family and above — offline reading of recently opened lists, cards, notes, journal, and freezer (depending on plan and enabled modules).
  • Family Plus — offline write (shopping, tasks, journal, intimate entries, notes, pocket money) and queue management in Settings. Freezer writes are online-only for now.

Parents manage the pending-change queue under Settings → Offline queue.

Inviting a new family member

Parents only Parents can invite other people into the family. The invitation arrives by email as a magic link.

  1. Tap Family at the bottom.
  2. Tap + and enter the new member's email and name.
  3. Send the invitation. The member receives an email with a sign-in link.
  4. Children can join without email via a QR code on the pairing page.
To pair a child's device, open Pair device on the parent's phone.

Revoking access

Parents only Parents can revoke access for a member who no longer belongs in the family.

  1. Tap Family at the bottom.
  2. Tap the member you want to manage.
  3. Choose Revoke access or Delete member completely and confirm.
The last active parent can't be removed — at least one parent must always remain.

Creating a Home Assistant token

Family Plus A token is a secure key that lets Home Assistant connect to the app — without sharing your login.

  1. Under Settings, open Service tokens (integrations).
  2. Tap Create token.
  3. Enter a name, keep type Home Assistant and Read-only permission.
  4. The token is shown only once — tap Copy and store it somewhere safe.
Copy the token immediately. You won't see it again after leaving the page — you'd have to create a new one.

HugoFamily AI plugin

Family Plus Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or another assistant to your family’s shopping, tasks, notes, meals, journal, freezer, and pocket money (read).

Sign-in uses OAuth — never paste a secret key into chat. HugoCards, HugoIntimate, and the canteen are not available through the AI plugin.

  1. In Settings open Integrations.
  2. In ChatGPT: Settings → Connectors → add an MCP server with address https://hugofamily.app/mcp/
  3. In Claude: Settings → Integrations → add the same MCP server address.
  4. In Cursor: in MCP configuration, add a remote server at https://hugofamily.app/mcp/
  5. Sign in as a parent and choose read-only if you don't want the assistant to change data.
If you suspect an access leak, revoke the connection in Integration Settings or in the assistant's account.

Pairing with Home Assistant

Home Assistant connects to HugoFamily via a service token and the official integration. The service base URL is https://hugofamily.app.

  1. Create a read-only token as described above.
  2. In Home Assistant add the HugoFamily integration (official HACS package on the way).
  3. Enter the token and the service address. After connecting you will see shopping, tasks, and other enabled modules.
Integrators and developers can use the REST API under /app/api/ — see the project documentation for details.
